Sequel to Before the Storm - and definitely read the first book before this one. Although it will stand alone, you'll miss a lot without the backstory. This book is told in journal letters by Sara, who has gone missing. The other chapters are mostly narrated by her teen son, Keith, who was burned in the fire that Maggie set, Andy - Maggie's teen disabled brother and Maggie herself, who is just released from prison for her role in the fire that killed three people and severly injured Keith. Interesting injecting "Jen" in the story, who befriends both Keith and Maggie, and has her own agenda. And it holds together the background of how Keith copes with his life changing injuries, and how Maggie reintegrates into society. How do you live with yourself, even if it was an accident, when you've destroyed so many lives with your actions?Product details

Secrets She Left Behind (Audible Audio Edition) Diane Chamberlain Abby Craden Kris Koscheski Lamplight Audio Books Reviews
Good story line ... I like the way this author titles each chapter with the name of the character, along with the character's individual story, while she intertwines their lives.
I love Diane Chamberlin! Her books draw me into the stories and it’s almost impossible to put her books down! I enjoy the mystery tied in with romance and the surprise you don’t see coming! I highly recommend reading her books!
Secrets She Left Behind is an intrigueing story of a series of convoluted relationships between husbands, wives, siblings, and their children built around the return of Maggie Lockwood's (see "Before the Storm") return to Topsail Island following her release from prison. Many of her neighbors and former friends feel she should not have been released, especially not so soon, after her actions led to the deaths of several townspeople and permanent scarring of Keith, one of her young former friends.
The story is very well done. Through it, you experience the depression Maggie feels due to hatred, the frustration of no one willing to accept her for her mandated community service, and the love Maggie's mother and uncle for her. When Keith's mother disappears, Maggie's family is at the forefront of trying to help find her, and as the story unfolds, there are surprising relationships among them all.
Very well done. I recommend it.
I absolutely love Diane's stories---there have been none disappointing me. And this one totally "wows" me. I read all of her books but since I have read hundreds in between, I couldn't have remembered details to this story from before. However, in Diane's wonderful style of writing, it's not necessary to have read or to have remembered details from before since she very subtly fills you in on what happened in the past. She does it so perfectly that it triggers all those memories and helps you to fit all the pieces together without an effort.
This is a story of love and loss, pain and agony, regret and hope. It is the story only a "retired" social worker can put together so effortlessly. She does get into the heads of all the characters and is able to develop each one so you feel that you actually know these people very well. You "live" in their small town and feel their pain.
I thought the ending was amazing----wonderful. But as others have shared, I also would love to see a trilogy and have the story continue in another book. Hear us, Diane? Perhaps that's your plan.
I have recommended Diane's books to many and everyone raves about her style, her knowledge of the human mind and foibles, her attention to detail and her powerful stories. She's the best in my book and I always look forward to her next quality story. They're never long enough---I never want them to end. So a continuation is always longed for. Keep them coming, Diane. )
I am in love with Diane Chamberlain books, from the lost son and secrets she left behind,I fantasize about moving to NC,visiting Wilmington and driving up the street where Sarah and Laurel lived,I can’t wait to get to the end I have a few pages left, you can live in the story and live in the characters but I wonder why Keith turned out horrible?
Secrets She Left Behind was a real page-turner. I've been wanting to read a Diane Chamberlain novel for quite some time and this book did not disappoint! I just learned it's a sequel, but this book stands on its own. Now it's time for me to find and read the first book, Before the Storm.
The story begins with Maggie being released from prison for acts that led up to a fire that killed three people and seriously injured several others. The characters were very well developed and it was interesting to read about the aftermath of the fire from the various points of view. Maggie cannot forgive herself and must deal with not only the fury of the community when she's released after a year in prison, but the prison of her own self-loathing. Keith, one of the burn victims, deals with the physical pain from his burns and also the emotional scarring, particularly painful for a formerly handsome teen with many girlfriends. Keith is unable to accept his own new personal appearance and assumes everyone around him is repulsed as well.
Secrets She Left Behind shows how a tragedy can be life-altering, not ending with the horror of the event, but having a devastating, persistent impact on the lives of all involved. Forgiveness is an important theme of this novel. When one unintentionally commits an act that has tragic consequences, how does one forgive oneself or at least find a way to carry on? How does not forgiving someone keep us stuck in a resentful, bitter prison of our own? This novel was suspenseful and thought-provoking. I highly recommend it!
Great, engaging book. Kept me hooked. I did read the prequel and that made this book even better, knowing the back story. That said, and this may be spoilerish, I felt bad for Keith! His association with the Lockwood's caused him great harm and distress. First, with the fire and then, with Andy keeping his mom's letter from him. I felt bad for the poor guy...he got all the bad breaks. I really enjoy this author's books and will continue to read them.
